Europacable welcomes the European Commissionโ€™s proposal to extend CBAM to downstream products. To ensure a level playing field and secure European manufacturing capacity, Europacable calls on EU co-legislators to:

  • Confirm the inclusion of power cables containing aluminium and steel within the CBAM scope
  • Close regulatory gaps to prevent circumvention
  • Accelerate implementation to limit carbon leakage
  • Ensure the competitiveness of European manufacturers, including on export markets

Without these adjustments, CBAM will continue creating unintended distortions, increasing costs for EU producers while leaving finished imported products outside its scope.

Power cables are a strategic net-zero technology, essential to deliver Europeโ€™s electrification and energy transition. Today, aluminium-based cables represent the backbone of Europeโ€™s electricity networks, supporting both distribution and transmission infrastructures.

Europacable and its members will continue engaging with EU institutions and Member States to support a framework that delivers both decarbonisation and industrial competitiveness.
