Industrial Accelerator Act: Europacable urgently calls on EU co-legislators for reintroduction of power cables into its scope

Europacable calls on EU co-legislators to urgently reintroduce power cables for electricity transmission and distribution into the scope of the Union origin requirements under the Industrial Accelerator Act covering the EU, EEA/EFTA countries and the UK.

Underground and subsea power cables are strategic net-zero technologies and critical infrastructure components. They are essential for Europe’s decarbonisation, energy security and industrial resilience.

We believe their urgent reintroduction is essential because:

  1. Rising Asian overcapacity: Subsidised non-European producers are distorting competition in Europe’s cable market.
  2. Securing European leadership: Europe’s cable industry, backed by over €4bn in investment, has the capacity to meet Europe’s demand with “made in Europe” solutions.
  3. Ensuring timely infrastructure deployment: European manufacturers can deliver on schedule; cables are not a bottleneck.
  4. Benefiting Europe’s economy: Supporting European producers boosts competitiveness, jobs, and autonomy, while ensuring resilient, innovative capacity for future technologies.

Power cables were included throughout the Commission’s drafting process and removed only at the final stage before publication. The final Impact Assessment also explicitly supports targeted “Made in Europe” requirements for these critical electricity technologies, reinforcing the case for their inclusion.
